Former US President Donald Trump, a contender for the US presidential nomination from the Republican Party in the November 2024 elections, was excluded from the state’s ballot by an Illinois judge, CNN reported, Day.Az reports with reference to Interfax.

The report said the decision was based on the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, which states that officials sworn to uphold the Constitution are prohibited from holding future office if they have “engaged in rebellion.”

A similar decision was previously made by the courts of the states of Colorado and Maine; the Colorado case is being considered by the US Supreme Court, CNN recalls.

It also comes just hours after the Supreme Court announced it would hear oral arguments on Trump’s claim that he has presidential immunity from criminal charges.

The Trump campaign’s social media account said the Illinois decision was “an attempt by Soros-funded Democrats to interfere in the election” and would be appealed immediately.
