The short story “Monsters” was published three years before Eiichiro Oda’s “One Piece” debuted in the weekly magazine “Weekly Shonen Jump” and brought Oda international fame. At first glance, the two stories have nothing in common, as neither pirates nor the navy nor other well-known characters from “One Piece” play a role. But “Monsters” solves a mystery that the heroes of “One Piece” must face:
butter “Bark Thriller” – Arc Zorro fights against a zombie samurai from Wano Kuni and gets his Shusui sword from him. This zombie was just Ryuma, the main character from “Monsters”. Much later, in the arc “Wano Kuni”, we also learn how Ryuma’s grave came to be looted and his body, along with his sword, ended up in the clutches of Gecko Moria. And finally the scoop: Roronoa Zoro is a descendant of Ryuma! When Zoro visits Wano Kuni, Kouzuki Hiyori convinces him to return the Shusui sword to Ryuma’s grave so that it can rest there as a treasure of the land. In return, Zorro receives the black sword Enma.
