Ruwan Wijewardena, Deputy Chairman of the United National Party, said that an early general election would create political unrest in the country and the end result would be a hung parliament.

Wijewardena said the above while speaking to the media yesterday (29) after meeting Askriya and Malvathi Mahanayaka Theras in Kandy.

No party will get majority

“No party will get a majority in Parliament in the general election, which will lead to a political crisis. An early general election would mean a reversal of the stability the government has achieved in Sri Lanka. ” he mentioned.

Wijewardena also said that even some of the opposition parties, including Podujana Peramuna and United People’s Shakti, support early general elections.

Ranil’s plan

President Ranil Wickramasinghe’s idea is to hold the first presidential election in accordance with the constitution. “If Wickramasinghe contests as a general candidate, we are confident that the majority of United People’s Power and Podujana Peramuna will support him,” he added.

He also said that neither the United People’s Power nor the National People’s Power (NPP) was challenging the United National Party.
