The analysis found that starting smoking and continuing smoking throughout life was associated with an increase in abdominal fat. This was most likely visceral fat, which covers the abdominal organs, rather than subcutaneous fat, which is located just under the skin. The lead author of the study, Dr. Germán Carrasquilla, says: “The influence of smoking on abdominal fat appears to be independent of other factors such as socioeconomic status, alcohol consumption, ADHD or the person’s willingness to take risks.”
