For the second time in 2024, the Grindavik volcano erupted in southwest Iceland.

Grindavik volcano at southwest Iceland exploded on Thursday (8/2) for the second time this yearaccording to public broadcaster RUV and other local media, making her sixth eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula since 2021.

The previous eruption began on January 14 and lasted for about two days, with lava flows reaching as far as the outskirts of the fishing village of Grindavik.

Because of the explosion, the hot water supply to more than 20,000 people was cut off and the Civil Protection Service declared a state of emergency.

Scientists are concerned that volcanic eruptions in Iceland could continue for years. Icelandic authorities have begun building dikes to keep burning lava flows away from homes and infrastructure.
