Poverty is gaining ground. According a study of the Research Center for the Study and Observation of Living Conditions (Crédoc) published on Wednesday, in 2022, 16% of French people said they did not eat enough. The results of the survey show that the increase in food insecurity especially accelerated in the second half of 2022.

The cause: inflation, which caused food prices to soar in January 2023. Three-quarters of those concerned cite the lack of money as the reason for their situation. Inflation which was not homogeneous on the different types of food: “The first prices experienced higher inflation than the national brands. The basket of people consuming these cheaper products has thus increased more than that of people buying national brands,” the study points out.

24% of people under 25 do not have enough to eat

Faced with this situation, 41% of people with low incomes had no choice but to restrict their food budget during the second half of 2022. For many of them, the lack of food coexists with the impression of cutting corners on the quality of food. To feed themselves, “more and more people have turned to food aid structures distributing parcels or hot meals”, indicates the study.

The first victims of this situation: women, the youngest (24% of those under 25) and the unemployed. The latter “often combine other forms of fragility, in particular vis-à-vis their health or their housing”, underlines the Crédoc.
