Melwar – There has been an allegation that repair work is going on at a cost of Rs 52 lakh to non-functioning shops in Melwar Farmers Market.

Since the farmers market started in 1999 at the 5th ward market place of Melwar Municipality till today farmers have not come to trade. But the account shows how the market works. As a result, the repair work is going on at a cost of Rs. 52 lakh for the last 5 months.

Social activist Nagendran said: In this market, wholesale traders are bidding in 6 shops. But in 33 shops the traders show false account of sales. They say that they will repair the shops that are not functioning properly at Rs 52 lakh. There is no notice board for viewing these works. Agriculture officials should inspect and ensure that farmers do business, he said.

Administrative officer Anbazhagan said that he has been creating awareness in the office twice a month by going directly to 36 villages. He said that despite giving cards to the farmers, no one came forward to run the shop.

Contractor Senthilkumar said that a notice board will be put up soon about the ongoing repair work. We have repaired all the shops. New toilets, paver block path, compound wall constructed. “We are going to build a new road,” he said.
