CPIM leadership in Alappuzha is on two floors in the drug trafficking controversy in Karunagappally. It is indicated that the official section is angry with the response of minister Saji Cherian that there is no evidence against A Shanawas, who was suspended by the party. The party had taken disciplinary action against him on the basis of information which proved that the lorry that smuggled the banned pan masala belonged to Shanawas and some of the accused were related to Shanawas. The position taken by the district secretariat including Alappuzha district secretary on the issue was that Shanawas should be expelled from the party as soon as possible. While the state government is proceeding with anti-drug measures, the official faction has suggested that Shanawas should be expelled and the LDF stand up. However, in the context of Shanawaz not being accused in the drug trafficking case, the majority opinion was that suspension action against Shanawaz is sufficient at present.

A commission has been appointed to investigate the allegations against Shanawaz. Shanawas was summoned to the district secretariat meeting and sought an explanation. After the meeting, Saji Cherian stated that the situation that brought insult to the party was seriously discussed and such issues will not be tolerated. Shanawas also responded that he would accept the party’s decision. District Secretary R. Nasser explained that they will investigate if more people are involved.
