Esports or electronic sports are becoming one of the most lucrative and fastest-expanding sectors in the world. In the last decade, this industry has seen 114% growth, increasing its revenue from $120 billion to $257 billion, according to figures from the World Economic Forum.

In Colombia, by 2024 the video game market is expected to reach revenues of $550.60 million, with a constant annual growth rate of 6.78% until 2027, according to Statista’s Esports industry statistical report. In addition, it is estimated that, for the same year, the national market will have around 9.6 million users, which highlights the growing impact of technology on the economy and society, driving changes in traditional business models and the emergence of new industries.

In response to these trends, the School of Administration of the Universidad del Rosario created Esports Management, the first undergraduate degree in Latin America and Colombia specialized in the gaming industry. This program, which was born in collaboration with Samsung, the Colombian Olympic Committee (COC) and the support of Pony Malta, not only contributes to the consolidation of the leisure and entertainment economy, but also recognizes the new educational trends of the Generation Z or digital natives.

An analysis carried out by the Center for Studies for Regional Competitiveness (SCORE) of the same university, reveals the trends of this industry:

1. Research growth

In the last 3 years, research related to electronic sports has had significant growth, going from 76 articles in 2021 to 160 articles in 2023, with the United States being the country with the greatest contribution to research products, followed for China.

2. Growth of job opportunities

There are 1,875 vacancies worldwide. The United States, Canada and the United Kingdom represent the main labor markets in the industry with 66% of the total registered vacancies, making visible the need to professionalize this industry.

Job opportunities are concentrated in the United States, with a 65% participation in the business development manager area, which confirms the need to have professionals capable of managing, leading and creating new innovative business models in the eSports industry.

In the case of Latin America, the areas of greatest demand are: administration (20%), recruitment (20%), finance (10%) and operations (10%).

3. National development potential

In Colombia, the growth of esports is on the rise with an emerging community of players and spectators seeking opportunities for engagement and entertainment.

In this context, electronic sports demand professionals capable of managing, leading and developing innovative business products and business models with an ethical and humanistic sense, to meet the demands of the sector.
