During the first six months of 2023, miners in Dagestan stole electricity in the amount of 23 million rubles. This was announced by the companyRosseti North Caucasus”.

“The volume of stolen electricity exceeded 5.7 million kWh. The amount of damage caused to the grid complex of the region is estimated at 23 million rubles,” the company said in a statement.

Violations were revealed during the raid activities of the company’s specialized divisions and law enforcement agencies. In total, six mining thefts were discovered. For each fact, a statement was sent to law enforcement agencies along with acts of unaccounted for consumption.

The company clarified that a criminal case was opened on one such theft under Part 2 of Art. 165 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (causing property damage by deceit or breach of trust). In Makhachkala, 341 cryptocurrency mining devices were found, which were located on the territory of the Dagestan-Ethanol company. According to the estimates of power engineers, the damage from these actions exceeded 1.5 million rubles, since 1.5 million kWh were stolen.

Rosseti North Caucasus emphasized that the “energy talks” endanger the grid complex, as unaccounted for consumption becomes the cause, among other things, of technological disruptions and low voltage.

On July 27, Vedomosti, citing the calculations of the Analytical Center (AC) of the Fuel and Energy Complex, wrote that electricity consumption for cryptocurrency mining in Russia in 2022 decreased immediately by 49% to 5 billion kWh. Due to “administrative limited measures”, Russia’s share in the global mining market has decreased from a maximum in 2021 to 4.6%. In previous years, it has grown steadily: in 2019 it was 6%, in 2020 – 8%, in 2021 – 9%.
