in full relaunch, the sector lacks hands

The juicy contracts raining down in the skies of Le Bourget (Seine-Saint-Denis) confirm this: after the Covid parenthesis, the aeronautics sector is in the midst of a relaunch phase. Airbus, which at the opening of the show, Monday June 19, garnered the largest order in history (500 medium-haul A320s to be delivered to the Indian company IndiGo, for a list price of 55 billion dollars, or 50 billion euros), is counting on a doubling of the fleet by 2042, just like its competitor Boeing.

The order books are full and the main challenge facing aircraft manufacturers and their subcontractors is now to deliver orders on time. A challenge, because the shortage of electronic components is not really over. And because players in the sector are having difficulty finding employees.

From CAP to bac + 8

Hence the initiative launched by the Groupement des industries françaises aeronautiques (Gifas), which organizes the show: during days for the general public, from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 June, visitors are encouraged to meet, with a CV, recruiters on company stands, from the largest (Airbus, Dassault Aviation, Safran, etc.), to SMEs and start-ups. The event is also punctuated by presentations of the various professions.

If we include space, 25,000 jobs are to be filled in France in 2023, from CAP to bac + 8: “engineers, experts but also many people destined for operational positions”, says Baptiste Voillequin, director of research and development, space and environment at Gifas.

“We will recruit 35 employees, mainly on permanent or work-study contracts, in tooling, assembly, cabling, supply chain management”, lists Anne-Sophie Seilliez, director of development at Esaris, a company with 525 employees based in Illkirch (Bas-Rhin), which manufactures electromechanical components and sub-assemblies.

To meet its needs, Esaris set up joint training with Matra Electronics for six people without qualifications each, “with the hope of keeping four”. At the same time, the company has entered into a partnership with the Grande Ecole Mines-Télécom. “We alternately recruit some of its students, likely to stay with us or to talk about us around them”, says Anne-Sophie Seilliez.

A sector singled out for its impact on the climate

Recruiting and retaining employees is a real challenge. “There is a relative loss of attractiveness to the benefit of other sectors such as finance, which often allows you to earn more, or digital marketing, perceived as cooler than aeronautics, which maintains fairly close links with the defense industry, analyzes Jean-Frédéric Real, marketing and innovation director at Scalian, which supports companies in business transformation and digitization.

“Aeronautics suffers from a general lack of appetite for technical and scientific professionscontinues Baptiste Voillequin. But the sector also suffers more specifically from a lack of image: long synonymous with expertise and dreams, it is almost banned today for environmental reasons. »

“Help us accomplish the decarbonization revolution!” »

While the plane is responsible for 2 to 3% of CO2 emissions (1), Jérôme Leparoux, secretary general of Daher, wants to send a message: ” Join us ! Help us achieve the decarbonization revolution and allow everyone to continue to travel by plane and thus open up to other cultures! » And to list the avenues for greener aviation, from sustainable fuels to hydrogen aircraft, through the optimization of flights and the development of new, lighter composites.

Daher, which is both an aircraft manufacturer and supplier of parts for the giants Airbus and Boeing, a leader in aeronautical logistics, has to face recruitment needs “three to four times higher than those before Covid”. There are thus 1,100 jobs awaiting candidates, compared to the current workforce of the company, 10,500 employees, including 8,500 in France.

“Many of these positions are to be filled in integration professions, in particular on the service sideemphasizes Jérôme Leparoux. You can enter our home without qualifications, go through our new training center in Tarbes, and climb the ladder one by one. »
