The end of thirty-three years of wage winter in Japan? We could hope so at the end of the first results of the shunto, the traditional spring salary negotiations which frame the dialogue between company management and house unions, published Friday. Rengo, the main trade union center in the country, which has around 7 million members, announced a first estimate of an increase of 5.28%, an unprecedented figure “since 1991”.

All day long, small and big names in national capitalism competed in publicity, talking about unprecedented boosts for a quarter of a century, from the Osho restaurant chain, “king of gyoza”, to Toyota, leader global automobile. Champion in all categories: the steelmaker Nippon Steel, which granted a 14.2% increase to its employees – more than what they demanded.
