In Taranto, some archaeological finds come back to life and will be exhibited in a public place while in Lecce the restored Historical Museum of the city reopens. Two important moments with different meanings. In Taranto it is an experiment, the first step of the project “Guest works » which aims to evacuate from the warehouses still invisible masterpieces due to the lack of exhibition spaces. Three Ionic marble capitals from the Roman period, a pilaster capital from the Roman period with elegant floral decorations in marble and two finely sculpted soft stone capitals from the Hellenistic period will be delivered to the Palazzo di Città. They will be temporarily entrusted to the Municipality by closing a process started about two years ago by the former superintendent Maria Piccarreta, now regional secretary of the Ministry of Culture, to whom the current superintendent Barbara Davidde has given continuity. “These six finds have always been in the deposits of via Viola of the former convent of Sant’Antonio – says Maria Piccarreta – and today thanks to an idea shared with the mayor Rinaldo Melucci and thanks to the installation by the architect Ressa they will be inserted along the access staircase to the first floor of the Palazzo di città. The goal is to make the works closed in the warehouses known and made available, if we manage to enhance them it means enriching the territories with a heritage unknown to most ».

Embroidered painting

Lecce, on the other hand, from Friday 21 May, will buy back its Historical Museum with a new management model and a renewed organization of the exhibition halls. It will be directed by the architect Claudia Branca, manager of the Culture sector of the Municipality. It occupies a large part of the spaces of the former 15th-century monastery of Santa Chiara. The new phase opens with two temporary exhibitions: «Embroidered Painting », dedicated to the works of Marianna Elmo, the Lecce artist who lived in the 18th century, famous for her mastery in using the technique of glued thread embroidery, and «Pictures, Imaginaries»With the exhibition by Marcello Nitti from Lecce and Niccolò Masini from Genoa. “I thank all those who worked on the reopening of the historical museum, which is entering a new season, joining – says the mayor Carlo Salvemini – the places of culture that are already active”.
