Police in the Mexican capital are investigating a murder suspect as a possible serial killer after bones, a saw, blood and identity cards of missing women were found in his rented apartment.

Prosecutors in Mexico did not name the suspect, but said he was being held pending trial on charges of murder and attempted murder of two women, BTA reports.

Those charges stem from an attack Tuesday in which the suspect apparently waited for a woman to briefly leave her apartment. He then broke in and sexually assaulted and strangled her 17-year-old daughter.

The mother returned and saw him leaving, but he stabbed her in the neck and ran away. The mother survived, but her daughter did not.

Since the suspect lived near the scene of the crime, he was quickly identified and apprehended. In accordance with Mexican law, police identified him only by his first name, Miguel.

When investigators searched the apartment he had rented nearby, they found shocking evidence “that clearly indicates this is a possible serial killer of women,” according to city attorney Ulises Lara.

Lara said that during the search of the apartment, detectives found “biological material” – he did not specify whether it was flesh – blood stains, bones, a saw, mobile phones and ID cards of missing women.

Most startlingly, they found “a series of notebooks that may contain accounts of the acts that Miguel committed against his victims,” Lara said.

Lara did not say how many bones or identity cards were found, but local media reported numbers ranging from seven to 20 possible victims.
