Rising food prices, more virtuous sailing races, excess dolphin mortality, reading for all… Here are some of the topics covered by the Nantes editorial staff of L’Onde Carrier. Its particularity: it is not made up of professional reporters but of seven employees in integration, supervised by a journalist. “My role is to teach them to adopt a journalistic posture and to understand how the media works”explains Capucine Frey, journalist and technical supervisor for the Nantes integration project, who regrets that the editorial staff are generally “not very inclusive and made up of people from the same social categories”.
The idea of making radio a medium for integration was born in the minds of Charlotte Waelti, former manager of associative radios, and Benoît Bouscarel, former journalist at Radio France. “Our initial objective was to open the radio to everyone”, says Charlotte Waelti, co-founder and director of the association L’Onde Carrier. The first radio integration project was born in Clermont-Ferrand in 2017. A second inclusive editorial office then opened in Reunion and a third in Nantes in November 2022.
Take the time to dissect the news
All the reports from these newsrooms are broadcast on the Le Chantier web radio station, which currently has a frequency in Clermont-Ferrand (98 FM). “Our editorial line is not hot news but taking the time to dissect societal, cultural or environmental issuesdescribes the director. We also try to promote new voices. For example, one of our employees has launched a podcast that gives voice to young female researchers. »
Employees in integration, faced with various situations of fragility (long-term unemployment, too general a diploma, intra-family violence, disability, housing problems, etc.), are aged between 19 and 60. For the moment, no one has become a journalist after The Carrier Wave, but kitchen clerk, Web developer, security guard or even assistant accountant. “We are an airlock between a situation of social precariousness and a slightly more enviable situation, says the director. And for this airlock, we take the best of radio and journalism so that they feed on it. »
Learn to articulate
In Nantes, Christophe Chauveau, 38, dreams of working in sustainable food. But after many years as a job seeker, he needed to reconnect with a stable daily professional life. “Here, I find objectives and requirements, he confides, a bit moved. I also learned to articulate in front of the microphone. Many of us were mumbling at first! »
Trained in bookbinding and shoemaking, after unfinished literary studies, Sophie Le Lann, 35, relishes this experience as a reporter. “I had already hosted film chronicles and I listen to the radio assiduouslyshe confides in a confident voice. I love preparing interviews as a team. We all come from a variety of backgrounds and our interlocutors often tell us that they are asked different questions. »
Open to the unknown
For employees furthest from the media, this project also serves as an education in citizenship. “They discover here something other than the programs of Cyril Hanouna and learn how our political system worksemphasizes Capucine Frey. For example, an employee did not know the name of the president but only that of Marine Le Pen… »
For these budding reporters, it is also an opportunity to discover new professional circles and build a network. By daring to push open doors and open up to the unknown. “Some employees are very worried before going on a report, continues the supervisor. But when we see them come back smiling and happy to have had a good meeting, we say to ourselves that the radio medium is really suitable for flourishing and regaining self-confidence. »

L’Onde Carriere, radio for all
Founded in 2015 in Clermont-Ferrand, The Onde Carrier association runs a work integration workshop, a radio station (Le Chantier) and a vocational training institute.
It has rolled out three integration projects in Clermont-Ferrand, Saint-Denis de La Réunion and Nantes, and plans to develop one in Paris.
She carries out media education projects in schools, at the university or with disabled people (prison, hospital, disability environment, etc.).
It is funded by the State (for employees undergoing integration), local authorities and the La France s’engage foundation.
