The French president expressed this opinion in an interview published on Thursday for the Economist magazine. Macron gave the interview after a speech at the Sorbonne University in Paris last week in which he warned that Europe was mortal and could die in part because of the threat posed by Russian aggression.

“I don’t rule anything out, because we are dealing with someone who doesn’t rule anything out,” Macron admitted when asked if he stood by what he said earlier this year that he wouldn’t rule out sending Western troops to Ukraine.

Several analysts believe that Russia may be preparing a new large-scale attack in Ukraine.

Macron said that if “Russia decides to go further, we will all have to ask ourselves this question anyway” about sending troops. He called his refusal to rule out such a move a “strategic wake-up call to my colleagues.” Macron described Russia as a “force of regional destabilization” and a “threat to European security“.

“I have a clear strategic goal – Russia must not win in Ukraine,” Macron emphasized. “If Russia wins Ukraine, there will be no security in Europe.”

“Who can pretend that Russia will stop there? What security will there be for the other neighboring countries, Moldova, Romania, Poland, Lithuania and others?” Macron asked rhetorically.
