The average age in the district is 44.4 years

Territorial Statistical Bureau Plovdiv summarizes the demographic profile of the Plovdiv region for 2022 in 5 indicators:

 The process of reduction and aging of the population continues;

 The number of live births decreases;

 The number of dead persons decreases;

 Child mortality is increasing;

 Decreases the number of civil marriages and the number of divorces.

At the end of 2022 the population of Plovdiv region is 631,516 people. Compared to the previous year, it decreased by 244 people, or by 0.04%.

There are 1096 women for every 1000 men.

At the end of 2022, 469,806 people, or 74.4% of the district’s population, live in cities, and 161,710 people live in villages.

There are 212 settlements in the Plovdiv region, of which 18 are towns and 194 are villages. There is not a single inhabitant in a settlement. In 19, or in 9.0% of the settlements, 1 to 50 people live.

As of 31.12.2022, the relative share of persons aged 65 and over is 22.3% (140,988) from the population of the district. Compared to 2021, this share remains unchanged, and compared to 2001, it increased by 5.5 percentage points.

Children under 15 are 14.7% (93,136) of the total population. Compared to 2021, this share remains unchanged, and compared to 2001, it increases by 0.1 percentage points. The general coefficient of age dependence – the ratio of persons under 15 and 65 and over per 100 persons of the population in the age group 15 – 64 years of age, is 58.9%. In cities, this ratio is more favorable – 56.2%, than in villages – 67.5%.

In 2021, the average age of the population as a whole for the district is 43.5 years. In 2022 the average age for the district is 44.4 years.

The population of working age by the end of 2022 is 373,738 people or 59.2% of the entire population of the district. The population over working age in 2022 is 158,345 people. At the end of 2022, the population under working age amounted to 99,433 people.

In 2022, a decrease in the number of births in the district and the birth rate is observed. In 2022. 6,146 children were born in Plovdiv region, of which 6,107, or 99.4%, were live births. Compared to the previous year, the number of live births decreased by 105 children. The birth rate is 9.7‰. Of all live births in 2022, 3,165 are boys and 2,942 are girls, or 930 girls per 1,000 boys.

There were 4,615 live births in the cities, and 1,492 children in the villages, or 9.8 live births per 1,000 people of the urban population, and 9.2 live births per 1,000 people of the rural population. A decrease in the birth rate was recorded in both cities and villages compared to the previous year. The birth rate in the Plovdiv district is slightly higher than the average for Bulgaria – by 0.9‰.

It is constantly increasing the average age of the mother at the birth of a child – 29.0 years for the Plovdiv region in 2022. In the villages, the average age of the mother at the birth of a child is lower – 27.0 years.

Since 1991, a trend of increase in the absolute number and relative share of illegitimate live births. Their relative share of 24.2% in 1995 will increase to 57.3% in 2021. In 2022, the number of live births out of wedlock was 3,431, or 56.2%.

In 2022 the number of dead is 10,783 people. Compared to the previous year, their number decreased by 2,909 people, and the total mortality rate (17.1‰) decreased by 3.5 percentage points compared to 2021. Mortality continues to be higher among men (18.1‰) than among women (16.1‰) and in villages (22.0‰) than in cities (15.4‰).

After the high level reached in 1999 – 16.9‰, the infant mortality rate decreased and in 2022 it reached 5.4‰. The infant mortality rate in the district is 0.6 percentage points higher than the average for Bulgaria. In 2022, 33 children under the age of one year died in the district.

The difference between the number of live births and deaths forms the natural increase of the population. And since from 1991 until now more people die than are born, this difference has a negative value, as a result of which the population of the district is constantly decreasing. In 2022 the absolute number of natural increase is minus 4,676 people. The value of the coefficient of natural growth for the district is minus 7.4‰; in villages – minus 12.8‰, while in cities this value is minus 5.6‰

In 2022, they are registered 2,655 legal marriages, and they are 148 less than the previous year and almost at the level of 2014. The average age at first marriage for men and women is 32.2 and 29.2 years, respectively.

In 2022 the number of registered divorces is 898 and is 60 less than those in 2021.

Internal migration includes persons who have changed their current address within the district and the country. In 2022, more than 5.4 thousand people took part in resettlement between settlements in the district, which is almost 1.3 thousand less than the previous year. Of all those who changed their usual place of residence within the district, 43.3% were men and 56.7% were women. In terms of the age structure, the largest relative share among those moving are persons in the 20-39 age group (29.5%), followed by persons under 20 years of age (28.3%). The greatest movement is in the direction “town – village”. A little over 1.9 thousand people (35.5%) changed their place of residence from a city to a village. Migration flows in the “village-city” direction are of a smaller scope – over 1.8 thousand (33.9%) and almost 1.1 thousand (20.4%) in the “city-city” direction.

As a result of migration between cities and villages, the population of the villages increased by 86 peoplerespectively, the population in the cities has decreased by that much.

Of those moving to the country 11,068 people have chosen the Plovdiv region as their new place of residence. The districts with the largest relative shares in the migration flow to the Plovdiv district are Sofia (capital) – 9.1%, Haskovo – 5.7%, Pazardzhik – 5.6%, Smolyan – 5.2% and Stara Zagora – 4.4%

As a result of mechanical growth, the population of the district in 2022 increased by 4,432 people.

In 2022, 755 people changed their current address from the district abroad, of which 55.6% were men. Another 2,944 persons changed their usual place of residence from abroad in the Plovdiv region. The relative share of men is 56.4%, and of women – 43.6%.
