The National Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (Inder) has suspended national and international events scheduled for the first quarter of 2021 due to the worrying resurgence of Covid-19 infections on the island.

The cancellations respond to the health protocols established by the Cuban health authorities according to an official statement from Inder. In March 2020, the sports organization had already applied restrictive measures in its calendar with the arrival of the virus in Cuba through foreign tourism.

The official note does not make clear whether joint training with foreign athletes is maintained. For the next few days, a training base had been announced at the home of the Cuban boxing preselection with 16 boxers from Kazakhstan in preparation for the postponed and still doubtful Olympic Games in Tokyo.

An Inder source confirmed to Cuba News 360 that the traditional international Manuel Suárez in Memoriam tournament based in Matanzas in March will not be held.

The new statement specifies that the cancellations “involve leaders of different categories and sports, as well as races and recreational festivals whose organizers will evaluate the option of appealing to the virtual format, according to its characteristics, scope and possibilities of adjustments to that area.”

Among the events to be held in this period from the rest of January to March are the national championships in chess, soccer, taekwondo and under-23 and youth baseball (17-18 years old), and the parapesas and parataekwondo championships.

INDER clarified that, as an exception, the 60th National Baseball Series will continue until the closing of the stage of pending matches. Their postseason will take place with the “bubble” system, in order to avoid infections, a possibility that had been advanced on our site.

Inder does not rule out possible rescheduling, according to the outcome of the pandemic in Cuba, which is registering record numbers of spread of the virus on the island with Havana as the epicenter of the terrible disease while no signs of the vaccine have yet appeared.
