UN resolution against Iran; India boycott

The UN has approved a draft resolution to expel Iran from the premier global intergovernmental body dedicated to gender equality and women’s empowerment. India has boycotted the Economic and Social Council.

The Economic and Social Council on Wednesday adopted a draft resolution introduced by the United States to remove Iran from membership of the Commission on the Status of Women for the remainder of its 2022-2026 term, citing the oppression of women and girls in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

29 votes in favor and 8 against, with 16 abstentions, including Bolivia, China, Kazakhstan, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Oman, Russia, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Mauritius, Mexico and Thailand.

Indian-American dies after jumping off San Francisco bridge

An Indian-American teenager has died after jumping off the iconic Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, his parents and US Coast Guard officials said.

A 16-year-old boy’s bicycle, phone and bag were found on the bridge. The Class XII student is believed to have jumped from the bridge around 4.58 pm on Tuesday.

The Coast Guard said it immediately launched a two-hour search-and-rescue operation after confirming sightings of “a man” jumping from the bridge.

Former UK Prime Minister who earned £1 million from four speeches

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has earned 1 million pounds ($1.24 million) from four speeches in the three months since he left office, official figures show.

Johnson stepped down as prime minister in early September after ministers and MPs lost support following months of scandals, including in parties at the heart of government, while the rest of Britain was under a strict lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic.

Boris Johnson, 58, was paid £1,030,782 for four speeches in October and November, roughly £30,000 an hour, according to the latest register of MPs’ financial interests.

Former Twitter manager jailed for spying for Saudi Arabia

A former Twitter executive accused of spying for Saudi Arabia years ago by sharing user data and harassing users was sentenced Wednesday to 3-1/2 years in prison, U.S. prosecutors said.

Ahmed Abuammo was convicted by a jury in August following a trial in federal court in San Francisco.

Prosecutors called for a prison sentence of more than seven years, saying it would be “strong enough to deter the sale of data on vulnerable users in the technology and social media industry”. Abuammo received the maximum sentence of ten years in prison.
