India to Host Yonex Sunrise BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championship 2024

The Yonex Sunrise BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championship, a premier event in junior badminton, is set to commence on Monday at the National Centre of Excellence in Amingaon, Guwahati. Host nation India, currently seeded second, will begin its campaign against Nepal at 12 PM local time, marking the opening day of the tournament.

Championship Overview & Schedule

The Suhandinata Cup, as the Mixed Team event is popularly known, will run from October 6th to 11th. Following the team competition, the Individual Championships for the Eye Level Cup will take place from October 13th to 19th. India has been drawn into Group H alongside the United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.

After the opening match against Nepal, India’s schedule includes a match against Sri Lanka on October 7th and a final group stage encounter with the UAE on October 8th.

New Relay Scoring System Introduced

This year’s championship will feature a newly implemented relay scoring system by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). According to tournament officials, each tie will be contested over three sets, with teams aiming to reach 45 points within a set to secure victory. Each set will consist of five matches: Boys’ Singles, Girls’ Singles, Mixed Doubles, Boys’ Doubles, and Girls’ Doubles.

Each individual match will continue until one side reaches 9 points, with the cumulative score carrying over to the next match. The first team to accumulate 45 points wins the set, and the overall tie is decided in a best-of-three format. This innovative scoring system is designed to maintain momentum and increase the excitement for both players and spectators.

India Joins Elite Hosting Group

India’s selection as a host nation places it among an exclusive group of countries – including Malaysia, Indonesia, Canada, Spain, and China – that have hosted the BWF World Junior Championships on multiple occasions. This demonstrates India’s growing prominence and commitment to developing badminton at the junior level.
