New Delhi: Indian boxers win gold at the 73rd Strongja Memorial in Sofia, Bulgaria. Nikath Zareen won gold in the 52 kg weight category while Nithu won gold in the 48 kg weight category.
Nithu defeated former Youth World Championship bronze medalist Erica Prisciantaro of Italy 5-0. Zareen defeated three-time European Championship medalist Tetiana of Ukraine 4-1.
Zareen, a native of Hyderabad, is a multi-time national medalist who also won a gold medal at the 2019 edition of the Strongja Memorial.
Nithu has twice won a medal at the Youth World Championships. He also won gold at the Asian Youth Championships.
The 21-year-old hails from Tanana village in Bhiwani, the cradle of Indian sports in Haryana.
It is noteworthy that Nithu, who was introduced to youth boxing by his father, took three years of unpaid leave from his state government job and trained.
He returned to work in Chandigarh when he began to excel internationally.

The performance of the men’s team was low this time and none of the seven contestants were able to enter the medal round.
The tournament was attended by 450 boxers from 36 countries, including Kazakhstan, Italy, Russia, France and Ukraine.
