Indian plan to bring wheat and wax to Afghanistan; Iran offers aid

Tehran: Iran has promised to assist India’s plan to bring aid to Afghanistan.

Iran has said it will support India’s plan to bring medical supplies, including wheat and Kovid vaccine, to Afghanistan.

On Saturday, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Iranian Foreign Minister Hussein Amir-Abdollahian made the remarks during a telephone conversation with Jayasankar. The announcement was made by Iran’s Foreign Ministry.

Amir-Abdollahian spoke about India’s humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has announced cooperation and other measures to transfer aid to Afghanistan in the form of wheat, kovid vaccine and other drugs, “said a statement from Iran’s Foreign Ministry.

The 920-kilometer border is shared by Iran and Afghanistan. So India can send aid to Afghanistan through Iran.

Afghanistan, which is under Taliban rule, is currently facing major challenges, including severe food shortages and the economic crisis. It was in this context that India came forward offering food and medicine.

India has sent three consignments to Afghanistan, including Kovid vaccines and other essential medicines. The first was sent on a chartered flight and the other two on Mahan Air, Iran’s airline.

The first chartered flight to Afghanistan carried 104 people from Kabul to India.

As promised, India now has 50,000 tonnes of wheat to supply to Afghanistan.

The Canadian-based International Forum for Rights and Security reports that the food crisis in Afghanistan will last until March 2022 and that they urgently need help from various countries and organizations.

The current problems are attributed to the Kovid epidemic, drought, domestic crisis and recession. Another major problem is the inability of the new Taliban government to raise funds for food security in the country.

Earlier, the United Nations warned that Afghanistan was facing a major food crisis and that millions of people, including children, would starve to death if immediate steps were not taken to recover from the devastation.
