Indie Ground Announces 88 Films for 2025 Independent Film Library, Boosting Korean Cinema

Seoul, South Korea – Indie Ground, established by the Korean Film Council (Chairman Han Sang-jun), has revealed the final selections for its ‘2025 Independent Film Library,’ a project designed to bolster the distribution of Korean independent art films and cultivate a wider viewership.The initiative represents a significant investment in the future of Korean cinema beyond the mainstream.
Record Submissions Reflect Growing Independent Scene
This year’s call for submissions attracted a record-breaking 996 entries – comprising 170 full-length films and 826 short films – completed after January 2024. This surge in submissions signals a vibrant and expanding independent film community within Korea. after a rigorous review process conducted by a dedicated selection committee, 88 films were ultimately chosen for inclusion.
Diverse Genres Represented in 2025 Selection
The selected films span a diverse range of genres, reflecting the breadth of creative vision within the Korean independent scene. The final lineup includes 58 feature films, 20 documentaries, 7 animations, and 3 experimental films. According to the selection committee, the chosen works offered “various perspectives on Korean society through the creative and intense work of the creators.” They further expressed excitement at discovering films with “a bit of roughness” and unique viewpoints that might otherwise be overlooked by traditional film festival circuits.
Financial Support and Expanded Distribution Plans
Selected filmmakers will receive financial support to aid in distribution: 4 million won will be awarded for feature films, and 1.5 million won for short films.Indie Ground plans to maximize audience engagement through a multifaceted approach, including special screenings, targeted publicity campaigns, community-based screenings, educational programs, and online distribution.
