Indonesia’s tourism sector received a significant boost this week, as its promotional video earned the prestigious International Grand Prix Award at the XIII International Tourism Film Festival in Bulgaria. The win underscores the nation’s growing prominence as a global travel destination and signals a successful strategy in international tourism marketing.
A Global Stage for Indonesian Beauty
Competing against 91 films from 18 countries, the three-minute “Wonderful Indonesia” video captivated judges with its stunning portrayal of the Indonesian Archipelago. Produced by the Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Indonesia and directed by Condro Wibowo, the video’s evocative imagery is set to the timeless melody of Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World.”
The festival’s chief judge, Irina Naydenova, explained the decision, stating, “The videos are exactly in line with the spirit of the festival. The fascinating natural beauty and the warm and welcoming culture presented have made us keen to come and visit Indonesia ourselves.” This sentiment highlights the power of visual storytelling in attracting international visitors.
Expanding Recognition: Awards for Collaborative Content
The Grand Prix Award wasn’t the only recognition for Indonesia’s tourism efforts. Two collaborative videos, created in partnership with international vlogger Kylor Melton – a brand ambassador for GoPro action cameras – also received accolades. These videos, “Wonderful Indonesia – A Visual Journey to Lombok” and “Wonderful Indonesia – A Visual Journey to Wakatobi,” were honored in the Nature and Ecotourism subcategory of the Advertising Film Category.
These award-winning pieces specifically showcase the unique attractions of Lombok Island in West Nusa Tenggara Province and the breathtaking underwater landscapes of Wakatobi Marine Park in Southeast Sulawesi Province. The success of these collaborations demonstrates the effectiveness of leveraging influencer marketing to reach new audiences.
Diplomatic Acceptance and Continued Momentum
The awards were accepted on behalf of the Indonesian Government by the Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia for Bulgaria, Mrs. Sri Astari Rasjid, at an awards ceremony held in Veliko Tarnovo City, Bulgaria. This diplomatic presence further emphasizes the importance of these achievements on the international stage.
This latest success builds upon previous recognition, surpassing the 2016 win for “Wonderful Indonesia – West Papua” in the Corporate Tourism Film/Spot category at the same festival. According to Indonesia’s Tourism Minister, Arief Yahya, these achievements are “the fruit of continuous hard work put into promoting Indonesia’s Tourism on the international scene that are created with exceptional quality.” He further stated that the awards will bolster the Wonderful Indonesia Brand and expand the nation’s global appeal.
The consistent recognition of Indonesia’s tourism campaigns at prestigious international festivals signals a sustained commitment to showcasing the country’s diverse beauty and cultural richness to the world. This strategic investment in tourism promotion is poised to yield significant returns in the years to come.
