Bolsonaro became ineligible
Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said this Friday (30) that he was persecuted by the TSE (Superior Electoral Court) when he was convicted and penalized eight years of ineligibility. The positioning occurred when talking to journalists when disembarking in Brasília.
“There is no doubt that it is persecution and an idea to hide something that happened in the 2018 elections,” he declared. The former president of the country reported that he “always defended the printed vote”, so he does not consider this to be a recent position.
“In an interview in 2017, I was asked what legacy I wanted to leave for Brazil. I was still a deputy. I said: ‘the approval of the printed vote’. Is it a crime to want to improve the electoral process?” he asked.
Bolsonaro ineligible
The Superior Electoral Court condemned Bolsonaro for spreading false information about electronic voting machines. With that, the former president will be ineligible for the next eight years. The trial ended with the score of 5 to 2 against the country’s former president.
The reserve captain attacked the Brazilian electoral system in a meeting with ambassadors in June 2021. In the view of the Electoral Court, the former ruler committed abuse of political power by broadcasting the meeting on TV Brasil, a state broadcaster of the federal government.
In addition to the rapporteur, Minister Benedito Gonçalves, magistrates Floriano Marques Neto, André Tavares, Cármen Lúcia and Alexandre Moraes voted for the conviction. Ministers Raul Araújo and Kassio Nunes Marques opened a divergence and asked for the ex-president’s acquittal.
In the rapporteur’s view, Jair Bolsonaro committed a serious error of misuse of the media by broadcasting a meeting that discredited the Brazilian electoral system.
