The current healthcare system is focused on avoiding undesirable situations. Fear of this leaves little room for encouraging healthy behaviour, especially in the care of the most vulnerable people in our society. The system has become more important than people. A consequence is that people with advanced dementia often live in closed residential groups of nursing homes. This while most care organizations embrace a movement from ‘disease to health’ and endorse that seniors with dementia should be part of society. However, ‘opening doors’ is more a wish (of the residents) and a policy yet to be realized than a daily reality. So the question is: how can people with dementia safely enjoy more freedom and move independently through our residential areas?
