The criminals who invaded the financial administration system of the Federal Government of Brazil, Siafi, used in the execution of payments, attempted to move at least R$ 9 million (US$ 1.7 million) from the Ministry of Management and Innovation.

According to preliminary investigations, they managed to divert at least R$ 3.5 million from the organ, of which R$ 2 million have already been recovered. The invasion of Siafi was revealed by Sheet. The National Treasury, Siafi’s managing body, implemented additional security measures to authenticate users authorized to operate the system and authorize payments.

Through a statement, the agency confirmed the “improper use of credentials obtained irregularly” and said that “attempts to carry out operations on the platform were identified.” The Treasury also stated that the actions “caused no harm to the integrity of the system.”

Members of the Government report that the criminals carried out three quick transfer operations using MGI resources, for three different banks. Investigators managed to recover the values โ€‹โ€‹transferred to two institutions, but a portion, transferred to a third institution, could not be recovered because the money had already been directed to other accounts.

The values โ€‹โ€‹in question refer only to what was mapped in the scope of the MGI. For PF investigators, the invaders managed to move values โ€‹โ€‹greater than R$ 3.5 million. There is still no public confirmation of the total sums or which organizations were the target of criminal action. The Federal Police investigates the case with the support of Abin (Brazilian Intelligence Agency). In order to make the transfers, the criminals stole at least seven passwords from servers that have a spending computer profile, that is, they have permission to issue bank orders on behalf of the Brazilian state.
