Vienna. Just a few days after the terrorist attack in Vienna, on November 9, 2020, a major raid took place in Austria, and 930 police officers searched 60 houses at the same time as part of Operation Luxor. The aim was to strike a blow against the Muslim Brotherhood. More than 100 people were charged in connection with the incident. The investigations included accusations of terrorist organization, terrorist financing and anti-state affiliation.

More than three years later, it was announced that insufficient evidence was found in the investigation and the charges against many of the defendants were dropped. According to information obtained from the Higher Regional Court of Graz, investigations against nine suspects (eight individuals and one association), including the so-called leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood in Austria, were dropped. The court decision in question “Despite years of investigation, there is no evidence to suggest that a conviction is possible.” he announced with his statements. The file maintained by the prosecutor’s office in Graz consists of 45 volumes and tens of thousands of pages. The file includes old videos and photographs of events in Vienna, as well as images showing the R4bia salute, the sign of the Muslim Brotherhood. The banned Hamas is also said to be the terrorist arm of the Muslim Brotherhood.

No evidence was found against the two brothers in focus

According to the prosecutor’s office, the so-called leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood in Austria were two brothers. One of the brothers declared on Egyptian television that he sympathized with the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood. The brothers also founded an Islamic association – but according to investigators, this association existed to educate people ideologically, establish a parallel Islamic state in Austria, and organize (financial) support for Hamas. The suspects were monitored for a long time by constitutional protection officers. Surveillance and phone monitoring were carried out. What emerged was a completely radical worldview. These included anti-Semitic statements, children’s on-stage fighting performances, approval of female circumcision, and rejection of marriage with non-Muslims.

As a result of long-lasting investigations, the Supreme Regional Court ruled in the case of two people alleged to be the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood that it could not be concluded that these people were members of the terrorist organization Hamas or financially supported Hamas, even if it was said that they identified with the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood. It was learned that he decided to do so. It was determined that the wiretaps and examination of the accounts did not raise any concrete suspicions, and even the photograph showing one of the brothers with a person associated with the Muslim Brotherhood or Hamas was not an “appropriate factual basis”. In the end, the Supreme Regional Court “There is no evidence in the file” It was announced that a conclusion was reached.

Lawyer Andreas Schweitzer, representing the brothers, said: “If there is nothing there, there is no need for the prosecutor to file a lawsuit.”

Teacher who praised Hamas

On the other hand, it was noted that the suspicions raised in the case of an Islamic teacher from Graz remained serious and that there was strong evidence. The man, who taught in primary and secondary schools, denied the accusation that he had “radical tendencies”, but investigators found a lot of incriminating data about him. These included a CD of anti-Semitic songs containing lyrics such as “O God, O beloved, I wish for a disease that destroys the Jews” or “Hamas, you, eyesight, the jihad begins.” Among other things, a text document was found in the „School 2020“ subfolder in the notebook stating that Muslims must go to holy war and accept death. There were indications that the teacher portrayed Hamas’ terrorist acts as “God’s will and heroism” and even recruited members. After years of investigations involving more than 100 suspects, it was learned that only 30 suspects remained. (yenivatan.at)
