by priyanka.patel tech editor

Forget fumbling for a plastic card. In 13 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, your iPhone and Apple Watch can now serve as digital proof of identity and age, thanks to a growing feature in the Apple Wallet app.

Digital IDs: A Convenient Upgrade, But Not a Replacement

The feature allows users to add their driver’s license or state ID to their Apple devices for seamless verification at select locations.

  • Currently available in 13 states and Puerto Rico, with seven more states planning to adopt the technology.
  • Accepted at over 250 U.S. airports for domestic travel at TSA checkpoints.
  • Requires iOS 26.1 or watchOS 26.1 or later to function.
  • A Digital ID based on a U.S. passport is available in states not yet supporting driver’s licenses in the Wallet app.

To get started, simply open the Wallet app on your iPhone and tap the plus sign in the top-right corner, then select “Driver’s License and ID Cards” and follow the on-screen instructions. It’s a surprisingly smooth process, turning your everyday carry into a streamlined experience.

Which States Are On Board?

As of today, residents in these states can ditch the plastic and go digital with their state-issued IDs within the Apple Wallet:

  • Arizona
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Iowa
  • Maryland
  • Minnesota
  • North Carolina
  • New York

The convenience extends to Puerto Rico as well.

  • Kentucky
  • Mississippi
  • Oklahoma
  • Utah
  • Arkansas
  • Virginia

Navigating Airport Security with Your iPhone

More than 250 airports across the U.S. now accept Apple Wallet IDs at TSA checkpoints for domestic travel. This is a significant step toward modernizing the travel experience. However, it’s crucial to remember that Apple Wallet IDs are *not* currently accepted by law enforcement and don’t cover all identification needs. A physical ID is still essential.

Here’s a sampling of airports where you can use your digital ID:

  • Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
  • Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)
  • Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
  • Denver International Airport (DEN)

  • Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG)
  • John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH)
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
  • San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC)
  • Los Angeles International (LAX)
  • Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL)
  • Des Moines International Airport (DSM)
  • Eastern Iowa Airport (CID)
  • Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ)
  • Lea County Regional Airport (HOB)
  • Billings Logan International Airport (BIL)
  • Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN)
  • Great Falls International Airport (GTF)
  • Missoula International Airport (MSO)
  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)

  • St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL)
  • Richmond International Airport (RIC)
  • Norfolk International Airport (ORF)
  • Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA)
  • Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport (PHF)

Always check for TSA signage to confirm availability at your departure airport.

Digital ID with Your Passport

If your state isn’t yet on board, you can now create a Digital ID based on your U.S. passport and use it for age and identity verification at participating TSA checkpoints during domestic travel. This feature, launched in November 2025, isn’t a substitute for a physical passport and can’t be used for international travel. It requires iOS 26.1 or watchOS 26.1 or later.

What states currently support Apple Wallet IDs? As of February 9, 2026, 13 states and Puerto Rico offer this feature, with seven more states expected to join soon.
