Hawaii will be the breathtaking new backdrop for the second season of Netflix’s hit thriller Untamed, the streaming service confirmed this week.
A Change of Scenery for Agent Turner
The gripping national park procedural will swap the familiar landscapes of Yosemite for the volcanic terrain of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The first season, which debuted last summer, followed grizzled special agent Kyle Turner, portrayed by Eric Bana, as he grappled with a personal crisis while investigating a perplexing case within Yosemite National Park. The show quickly captivated audiences, becoming the most-watched TV show on Netflix globally.
Season two picks up a year and a half later, with Turner having tackled numerous cases in other national parks before arriving in Hawaii. Production is already underway on the six-episode season, which will see him investigating a mysterious death within the boundaries of the park, home to two active volcanoes.
What makes Untamed stand out? The show’s inventive setting, combined with a strong cast, elevates it beyond typical crime thrillers, drawing comparisons to acclaimed series like Broadchurch and Mare of Easttown.
“We’re excited to explore the pristine landscapes and cultural identity of a very different national park, and find Turner in a new state of mind, outside the comfort of Yosemite,” co-creators and executive producers Mark L. Smith (known for his work on The Revenant) and Elle Smith shared in a statement to Netflix’s Tudum.
Elle Smith further explained that the unique characteristics of each national park will play a crucial role in the narrative. “Each national park has such a different cultural identity, geographical identity,” she said. “Being able to explore those places through the case and through Turner’s journey is what’s so fascinating [about] getting to choose a new park.”
The creators emphasized that the park isn’t merely a location, but an active element in the story. “Our theme has been that this park is our main character, this park is sort of alive,” they stated. “We do want to maintain that thread. Whichever park we choose will be a character, and it will play a role in Turner’s emotional frame of mind.”
Untamed’s first season dominated Netflix’s charts for seven weeks, accumulating a total of 92.8 million views, according to Deadline.
