Apple launched the iPhone Duo on October 23, 2026, featuring an inner display 50 percent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Developers are rolling out specialized apps optimized for the new dual-screen form factor, though third-party support remains uneven as teams race to adapt.
Third-Party Developers Race to Adapt Apps for the iPhone Duo
Apple’s first foldable device comes in night sky and star white, with storage options of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB, priced from $1,999 (U.S.) or monthly payments of $83.29 (U.S.) over 24 months.
The tight timeline left many software teams scrambling. Even those who started immediately faced the choice of when to allocate resources toward updating their apps for Apple or adding new functionality, all while learning the requirements of the iPhone Duo, redesigning and coding for the device, and submitting their work to the App Store in hopes of approval before the October 23 launch. Consequently, while major streaming services and select independent titles are ready for day one, a vast majority of App Store software still runs unoptimized.
Streaming Services and Major Platforms Lead Day-One Optimizations
Among the first wave of optimized software, video streaming applications take clear advantage of the dual-screen setup. Netflix members can browse clips on the outer screen and then unfold the iPhone Duo to continue viewing on the expansive nano-texture inner display, as content transitions smoothly between horizontal and vertical orientations. Paramount+ offer richer playback controls and expanded browsing for shows and live channels.
Productivity and communication tools are also shifting toward desktop-class layouts. On social platforms like Instagram, more Stories and posts are visible simultaneously; additionally, Instagram’s Edits allows creators to access their complete creative studio—including video, editing tools, and the timeline—while users of Instagram and TikTok can view videos on the left while interacting with and reading comments on the right. Slack puts rooms and contacts on the left and messages on the right using a handy two-column layout.
The response to iPhone Duo from our developer community has been incredible, and we’re inspired by how quickly they’ve embraced its larger display and new ways to interact.

In the sports sector, Major League Baseball ensured its app was ready. When iPhone Duo is propped open on a table, users can enjoy content hands-free, providing an exciting new fan engagement platform by showcasing the action and information simultaneously according to Kenny Gersh, MLB’s executive vice president of Media, Business Development, and Product. For the first time on iPhone, Split View enables users to run two apps side by side, a feature that productivity applications are utilizing to maximize the additional space.
Indie Developers Experiment With Skeuomorphic and Novelty Apps
Beyond mainstream productivity tools, independent developers have embraced the hinge design to build whimsical and retro-themed software. Deck-man turns your iPhone Duo into a portable cassette player, and other releases include Battlefleet Duo, Delta Game Emulator which turns the Duo into a Nintendo DS with its shell and sleep mode features, Fold Accordion which turns the iPhone Duo into an accordion using the hinge as bellows, and Nitelore an anti-gravity racing game with neon colors. Gentler Streak and The Outsiders have been updated as version 5.13.5 for Gentler Streak and 1.8.3 for The Outsiders.

Translation tools have also secured prominent placement. Air Apps, an independent mobile app developer founded in Lisbon and headquartered in San Francisco, announced that its translation app, Translate Now, has been featured in the App Store’s Great on iOS 27
editorial selection, building on an interface update for iOS 27 as the company prepares a resizable layout for the iPhone Duo using Apple’s Liquid Glass design language.
Global Workshops and the Road Ahead for App Ecosystem Support
To speed up the process, over 2,000 developers have participated in more than 50 in-person workshops across 19 global cities, with further sessions scheduled in Toronto, Paris, Montreal, Mexico City, and London to allow more teams to test the iPhone Duo and update their games and apps. Developers can now submit optimized apps to the App Store, and Apple Developer provides a series of Tech Talks and design guidance for the iPhone Duo.
Existing users with compatible devices can access updates through the App Store, with no separate setup required.
