Iran Attacks Israel: US Troops Wounded, Retaliation Strikes Begin

by Ahmed Ibrahim World Editor

Escalating tensions across the Middle East saw a flurry of attacks late Friday and into Saturday, with Iran launching direct missile strikes against Israel, prompting retaliatory measures and raising fears of a wider regional conflict. The exchange of fire follows a recent strike on an Iranian consular building in Damascus, attributed to Israel, which Tehran vowed to avenge.

The most immediate impact was felt by U.S. Forces stationed at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, where twelve American soldiers were wounded in the Iranian attack, according to a U.S. Official who spoke to Reuters. Two of those service members sustained serious injuries. Simultaneously, Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defense announced on X that it intercepted a ballistic missile headed towards the capital, Riyadh.

The attacks represent a significant escalation in the already volatile situation, moving beyond proxy conflicts to a direct confrontation between Iran and Israel. What we have is a dynamic situation, and the full extent of the damage and potential for further escalation remains unclear. The United States has reaffirmed its commitment to Israel’s security, but is similarly urging de-escalation.

Iranian Missile Barrage Targets Israel

The Israeli military (IDF) confirmed that Iran launched missiles directly towards Israel on Friday, with air defense systems activated to intercept the incoming projectiles. According to reporting from Haaretz, one person was killed and two others injured as a result of the attacks. Images circulating online, including one from Ramallah in the West Bank, appear to indicate what witnesses described as Iranian missiles streaking across the night sky.

Air raid sirens reportedly sounded across Israel, including in Jerusalem, as the IDF worked to intercept the incoming missiles. This direct attack from Iran marks a significant departure from previous engagements, which largely involved support for proxy groups.

Expanding Regional Involvement

The conflict is no longer limited to Israel and Iran. Early Sunday morning, the IDF reported detecting a missile launched from Yemen towards Israel, also intercepted by air defenses. This represents the first such attack from Yemen during the current escalation, raising concerns about the potential for broader regional involvement. The Houthi militia in Yemen, backed by Iran, has previously threatened to join the conflict.

Further complicating the situation, Israel confirmed strikes against Iranian nuclear and industrial facilities earlier Friday. The IDF, as reported by Reuters, stated that the Arak facility targeted is a key site for Iranian plutonium production, potentially for use in nuclear weapons. Simultaneously, Iranian state media reported attacks on two major steel plants, Khuzestan in the southwest and Mobarakeh in Isfahan.

In Lebanon, southern suburbs of Beirut were struck by unexpected Israeli airstrikes, according to AFP correspondents. The IDF confirmed the launch of a recent wave of attacks targeting “Hezbollah infrastructure.”

The situation remains highly fluid, and international efforts to de-escalate the conflict are ongoing. The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting Sunday to discuss the escalating crisis. The immediate priority is to prevent further escalation and protect civilian lives. Further updates will be provided as they grow available.
