The historic agreement marks a significant turning point after seven years of strained relations characterized by hostility and competition. These disrupted global energy markets, and fueled conflicts throughout the Middle East.

The key to the agreement, according to what the Saudis told the Americans, was a commitment by Iran to cease further attacks on Saudi Arabia and reduce support for militant groups that attacked the kingdom.

According to a Bloomberg report, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani announced on Monday that Iran “supports all diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving political alignment in the region and promoting economic prosperity for all parties involved.” Canaan has so far refused to confirm the reports of the upcoming conference mediated by Sinai, which is intended to include Iran, Saudi Arabia and other members of the Gulf Cooperation Council. At the same time, in a speech he gave in Tehran, Canaan expressed his satisfaction that the meeting between Iran’s senior diplomat, Hossein Amirbadolhian, and his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, will take place in the near future. The relaxation of relations between Tehran and Riyadh coincides with a period of increased public opposition and deterioration of the economic situation within Iran, which has placed significant pressure on the country’s theocratic leadership.

“Removing misunderstandings and discussing the future of relations between Tehran and Riyadh will definitely lead to improving regional stability and security, as well as increasing cooperation between the countries of the Persian Gulf and the Islamic world in managing the current challenges,” Ali Shamkhani was quoted as saying by Iran’s government news agency IRNA.

Kanani confirmed that Iran seeks to mend relations with other regional countries, including Egypt and Bahrain, which have severed or reduced diplomatic ties with Tehran in response to its regional policies over the past ten years. “The potential of Iran-Egypt relations is necessary for the region,” he stated. “We are convinced of the need to take new steps in our relations.” In addition, Canaan stated that the agreement may have a positive effect on the ongoing proxy war in Yemen.
