The son of Iran’s last shah, Reza Pahlavi, has accused the ruling clerical establishment of becoming an “occupying force” that has “hijacked” the nation, calling for immediate international action to facilitate a transition to a “free and democratic Iran.” Pahlavi outlined a plan for the “frist 100 days after the regime’s collapse,” prioritizing economic restoration and the maintenance of essential services, during a press conference Friday.
Mounting Opposition and a Rising Death Toll
Exiled in the United States, Pahlavi has emerged as a prominent voice opposing the ongoing protests and unrest that have gripped Iran for nearly 20 days. The demonstrations, fueled by deep-seated discontent, are occurring against a backdrop of escalating violence. According to the Norway-based NGO Iran Human rights, at least 3,400 people have been killed and over 10,000 detained as the start of the protests. Other organizations estimate the figures are even higher.
Pahlavi’s call for international intervention comes as the protests show no signs of abating. He envisions a parallel process of constitutional reform, overseen by international observers, leading to “free and fair” elections and ultimately, an Iran that “lives in peace with its neighbors.” The ultimate goal, he stated, is to restore “total control of their own destiny” to the Iranian people, reclaiming power “snatched away by this regime.”
A 100-Day Plan for Transition
The proposed plan focuses on immediate stabilization followed by a long-term commitment to democratic principles. key elements include:
- Economic restoration: prioritizing the rebuilding of trust in the Iranian economy.
- essential Services: Ensuring the continued operation of vital infrastructure and public services.
- Constitutional Process: Initiating a constitutionally-lead transition under international observation.
- Free Elections: holding genuinely free and fair elections to establish a representative government.
Seeking Support from Washington
Pahlavi expressed confidence in securing the necessary support to guide Iran through this transition, asserting that he has the backing of both his compatriots and international allies. “I am sure that I have the support of my compatriots and I believe that the Iranian people have overwhelmingly declared who they want to lead this transition,” he stated. He emphasized his long-standing commitment to democracy and human rights, stating, “They know my track record. They know my unwavering commitment to democracy and Human Rights. This has been my position from day one and I maintain it to this day. They know they can trust me.”
Notably, Pahlavi defended the potential for U.S. military action to weaken the Iranian authorities and protect the population, which he described as “defenseless in the streets.” He argued that targeting the regime’s repressive forces would “facilitate our task, prevent further loss of life, and weaken the regime to the point where resistance will be futile.” He believes such action could encourage the regime’s leadership to step down, signaling a complete collapse.
Trump’s Pledge of Assistance
Pahlavi urgently appealed to the international community for swift assistance, emphasizing that a faster response would save lives and accelerate the regime’s downfall. He specifically cited the commitment expressed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has stated that “help is on the way.” “I believe the president is a man of his word,” Pahlavi affirmed.
The situation in Iran remains volatile, and the international community faces a complex challenge in responding to the escalating crisis. pahlavi’s call for intervention underscores the growing desperation of those seeking change within Iran and the urgent need for a coordinated response to prevent further bloodshed.
