Ireland Set to Hand Prop Paddy McCarthy Debut as Sheehan Earns Second Captaincy

Ireland is poised to give Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy his first international cap on Saturday, while hooker Dan Sheehan will lead the team for the second time in his career. The selections signal a blend of emerging talent and established leadership as Ireland prepares for its upcoming match.

McCarthy’s Ascent to the International Stage

The 22-year-old McCarthy, younger brother of lock Joe McCarthy, has rapidly ascended through the ranks, earning a place on the bench for Saturday’s game. He was previously part of Ireland’s summer squad for matches in Georgia and Portugal, though he remained an unused substitute under interim coach Paul O’Connell. However, the current head coach has been closely monitoring McCarthy’s progress for some time.

“That’s why we train against the under-20s, so we know who is coming through,” a senior official stated. The practice of pitting the national team against younger players is considered a vital part of Ireland’s development pipeline. “Imagine being in the under-20s and you didn’t get an opportunity to train against the first team and every other year has. It’s an unbelievable tradition.”

The coach recalled McCarthy’s impact during training sessions with the under-20s in 2023, noting that the young prop consistently challenged the established players. “He spoiled our session on many occasions, but there’s something in the eyes there that not a lot of people have got.”

Sheehan’s Growing Leadership Role

Alongside McCarthy’s potential debut, Dan Sheehan will captain Ireland for the second time, having previously led the team against Wales earlier this year during the Six Nations. He also captained the British and Irish Lions in a game against Western Force in June, demonstrating his burgeoning leadership qualities.

Despite having other players capable of filling in for Caelan Doris, who is starting on the bench after recovering from shoulder surgery, the coach highlighted Sheehan’s remarkable development as a leader. “He’s so calm, controlled, considered,” the coach explained. “He uses, from his body language to everyone else, that he’s in control. That it will be OK. Let’s just prepare properly.”

This composure, according to the coach, instills confidence throughout the squad without compromising Sheehan’s own performance. “That gives confidence throughout the squad. Not just that, he doesn’t get in the way of his own performances either. It’s a big honour for him and I suppose that will continue to grow for him down track.”
