The BCCI a few days ago announced Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Indian team for ODIs and T20s. The BCCI has also removed Virat Kohli from the ODI squad after he said he would step down as captain only in T20 matches. Sourav Ganguly has stated the reason for appointing Rohit Sharma as the current captain. There was a pre-consultation with Virat Kohli about giving the captaincy responsibility to Rohit Sharma. The BCCI had spoken to Virat Kohli before announcing his resignation as captain in the T20 tournament. We were repeatedly asked not to resign as captain. But the goalie did not agree to that. The BCCI does not want the decision to have a captain for T20s and a captain for ODIs.
Due to this, the BCCI announced Virat Kohli as the Test captain and Rohit Sharma as the ODI and T20 captain. Prior to this announcement, the selectors and I spoke privately with Virat Kohli. Virat Kohli’s performance as the captain of the Indian team was excellent. We have high hopes for Rohit Sharma. And we hope that Virat Kohli will continue to show his talent in Test matches.
The Indian team definitely needs Virat Kohli as a batsman. He said that at present we believe that the Indian team is a strong team. The Indian team, which is touring South Africa, will play its first Test match on the 26th. Rohit Sharma has also been appointed vice-captain in Test cricket.
