Is Robin Gosens about to leave Union Berlin after just one season? Italian media are reporting interest from the 29-year-old’s old hometown.
It was one of the transfer coups of last summer when 1. FC Union Berlin announced the signing of Robin Gosens in August 2023. With the left-back, the Köpenick team prepared for their first Champions League season. And after three successful years, the Berliners also thought they had good chances in the league.
But Union fell short of the increased expectations. After a disappointing start to the season, the long-time guarantee of success, coach Urs Fischer, had to leave. With five match days to go, the Köpenickers are still in the middle of a relegation battle. National player Robin Gosens, who was no longer noticed despite good performances in the last national team nomination, is therefore said to be on the verge of leaving. This is reported by the Italian “Corriere dello Sport”.
International business beckons
Several Italian clubs are said to be closely monitoring Robin Gosens’ situation and have expressed cautious interest.
Lazio Rome is said to be among those interested, but FC Bologna is also said to be interested in the national player. While the Romans have fallen somewhat this season after their runner-up finish last year (currently in 7th place), FC Bologna currently has a good chance in the fight for the Champions League places (4th place).
At Lazio Rome, the position of left-back or left-wing player is not deep enough this season. Winger Felipe Anderson has often had to help out in this position. So Gosens would have a good chance of getting a regular place.
Best time in Italy
He already played in Serie A between 2017 and 2023. The left-footed player probably spent his most successful time to date at Atalanta Bergamo and became a national player there.
At Inter Milan (January 2022 to August 2023), Gosens often did not get beyond the reserve role. Nevertheless, he was able to draw attention to himself again and again with good performances. And Gosens is also one of the few bright spots this season at Union. In 32 competitive games, the defender scored seven goals and added another. This is said to have aroused interest from Italy.
Only a year in Germany
In the past, Gosens repeatedly emphasized how comfortable he felt in Italy. The Emmerich native also speaks the language perfectly. He should therefore definitely be able to imagine returning. However, Gosens only moved to Union Berlin last summer.
With the move he fulfilled his dream of playing in the Bundesliga. Gosens is also popular with Köpenick fans. During his appearance on the ZDF sports studio at the end of March, he said about his future: “Next year we won’t play internationally. My ambition is clear: to always achieve what I consider to be the highest level. That’s why we’ll reflect after the season and see what that means “But that doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m saying goodbye after one season.”
So it remains to be seen whether he will move back to Italy after just one year in Germany.
