This is an opinion that was presented last April 25, 2023by the Constitutional Points Commission of the Chamber of Deputies.

This project seeks reform the Federal Labor Law (LFT), with the purpose of modifying article 123 of the Constitution.

However, more than a year after this situation, the reform that proposes a 40-hour work day could not be voted on in plenary.

The 40-hour work day was planned to be voted on since last April 2023, however, on the 26th, one day after the proposal was presented, the Lower House the regular session ended.

Thus, its vote was postponed again, although the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) expected that this would happen at the end of that year.

Despite these intentions, again no consensus was reached for it to be voted on, in addition to the fact that President Andrés Manuel López Obrador suggested that was postponed.

At the beginning of 2024, Jucopo indicated that given the interest in this reform, it would be in the month of March when the opinion would be available again for the plenary session.

This situation again it didn’t happenso it was noted that the modification to the LFT would have to continue being analyzed after a vote.

Thus, one day before the Senate ends its session on April 30, the Chamber of Deputies did not send the opinion.

In this way it was determined that the current Legislature will not be in charge to approve or reject the measure, so until now this reform continues in the air.

According to legislators, it will be until after the 2024 elections when the new legislature is the one who decides the future of this proposal.
