Taipeh (Taiwan) – Ramen is a Japanese noodle soup – and not only popular in Asia. The dish has fans all over the world. It is most commonly served with side dishes such as pork, green onions, and bamboo shoots.

Latest and very unusual ramen creation: Assel, a protein snack with 14 legs.

The restaurant “The Ramen Boy” in the Taiwanese capital Taipei serves the “Isopod Ramen”. Isopod means isopod, an animal from the class of higher crabs. In Germany we only know them as small crawlers, but here we are talking about fairly large animals.

Earlier this week, the eatery announced that “Isopod Ramen” is now on the menu. The noodle soup is garnished with the isopod, which has 14 legs and reminds some of an “alien creature”. The dish is infused with a strong chicken broth.

The Ramen Boy touts the isopod as a protein-packed “dream ingredient.” The animal usually lives at depths of 365 to 730 meters in the Atlantic Ocean and is therefore by no means easy to obtain. This affects the price of “Isopod Ramen”.

A bowl of soup for 45 euros

A bowl of the soup costs according to “ Taiwan News“ just under 50 dollars, which corresponds to around 45 euros. By the way: The creature’s shell only serves as decoration in the finished soup. The cooked meat is added to the noodle soup before serving.

But how does the isopod soup taste? The restaurant also provides information on this.

The white flesh is said to resemble tastes of lobster and crab. The yellowish glands (yes, they are eaten too) taste “unexpectedly sweet, like shrimp paste”.

If you are still craving the “Isopod Ramen” and would like to try the dish when visiting Taiwan, you should find out about the availability beforehand.

Because the giant isopods are not fished for commercial use, The Ramen Boy describes the special noodle soup as a “limited edition offering with an impressive appearance.” Well then – Bon appetit…
