The mental health of the population is an essential pillar of comprehensive well-being. For this reason, the 240 professionals in psychology who work in the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (Issste) are responsible for promoting and attending to this type of illness with a program such as the Purple Code.
The general director, Pedro Zenteno Santaellarecognized his leadership and outstanding work in the operation of the innovative Comprehensive Mental Health Program and all services for the benefit of beneficiaries with mental illnesses, as well as their participation in preventive actions that are promoted in the communities.
The national head of Mental health from the Institute’s Medical Directorate, neuropsychologist Lucía Ledesma Torres, pointed out that there are many contributions that ISSSTE psychologists have added to the well-being of members. At the first level of care, this group participates in extramural and intramural actions to gradually recover the mental health of patients who were significantly disrupted during trans-pandemic times.
During the last two years, they have carried out outstanding work in original ISSSTE ventures, such as the mental health orientation and counseling program for health personnel, scholarship holders, and resident physicians.
Psychological care within the ISSSTE
Regarding psychology services in units, specialty clinics and hospitals, which comprise the second and third level of services, the Medical Financial Information System (Simef) reports that in 2022 they provided 198 thousand 606 consultations.
As part of the multidisciplinary team in charge of the 165 smoking cessation services, they have provided more than 1,600 treatments in 2022 and so far in 2023.
Specialists are part of protocols for vulnerable populations, such as care for people living with HIV, those who experience processes associated with their gender identity, and professional assistance to migrants from the isthmus of Oaxaca.
Other relevant activities in which they participate are animal-assisted mental health interventions, which represent unique practices in the sector, and carry out the undertaking of actions in collaboration with other instances of the sector as part of the Mental Health Sector Plan ” Live Healthy MENTE” in which ISSSTE participates.
The neuropsychologist Ledesma Torres pointed out that mental health at the institute is advancing by leaps and bounds, and the continuous updating of the personnel is a commitment of the ISSSTE. For this reason, the Medical Department offers more than 30 courses to this guild.
