Mental Health Spain adheres to the campaign “Together better: Co-creating the future of mental health”

With a focus on co-creation, Mental Health Europe promotes an inclusive conversation and call to action that builds a positive approach to mental health. Different actions will be disseminated during the fifth edition of the European Mental Health Week, held from May 13 to 19.

With the motto “Better together: Co-creating the future of mental health”the fifth edition of the European Mental Health Week takes place from Monday, May 13 to Sunday, May 19, 2024. Created and directed by Mental Health Europethis year the campaign focuses on co-creation. And generating conversation about mental health means that we all promote a vision that provides specific experience, knowledge and skills.

Raising awareness about the importance of mental health in our daily lives involves a genuine exchange of information about all the aspects that make up this reality; the sharing of personal stories about how to face difficulties and, above all, the need to act.

Co-creating means different people working together towards the same purpose; specifically, better mental health for everyone. The #EuropeaHealthMentalWeek this year tries to make this construction of shared meanings a reality, proposing that “making con” is better than “do for”. In this way, the 2024 campaign provides a comprehensive and inclusive framework – first-person cases, professionals, academics, organizations, political decision-makers and opinion leaders – so that, as a community, we contribute and promote essential ideas and practical tools.

Mental health is associated with a living, dynamic process, and not with a single result. It is a collaborative approach in which all those involved contribute on equal terms to develop and implement policies, services, programs and communication that promote positive mental health according to a psychosocial model and a human rights-based approach.

European context

It is key to highlight that the best actions in mental health have to do with the real needs of people. This is clearly seen with the imminent elections to the European Parliament, to be held from June 6 to 9 of this year.

In this frame, Nel González Zapicopresident of SALUD MENTAL ESPAÑA, explains that ““It is vitally important that preventing and addressing mental health problems is a priority on the European political agenda.” And warns that if not: “The forecasts of the World Mental Health Organization will be fulfilled, which indicate that, if this situation is not addressed immediately, in 2030 mental health problems will be the leading cause of disability in the world.”

Co-creation calls for shared responsibility based on collaboration, respect, equality and, in the face of new perspectives, innovative capacity. It is a call to design better recovery pathways, care, and real inclusion. We can be part of this campaign through one of the many in-person and online events taking place across Europe (for more information, click here); raising our voices for mental health and sharing an empathetic and supportive message; even wearing a green ribbon as a sign of support, or simply starting a conversation without barriers in our community.
