The lawyer and human rights defender, José Santoyo, assured that it is illegal not to accept national or international credit cards in commercial establishments in the country.

Santoyo affirmed that this action violates free trade and hits the Venezuelans’ pockets harder.

He explained that the act of not accepting this payment is a crime and carries a criminal penalty. It is up to the State security forces and the Public Ministry to be aware of this irregularity.

The jurist highlighted that this refusal by merchants affects citizens tremendously.

It is applauded by all that the banks have increased the limits between 100 and 400 dollars, but by refusing to receive the cards they are limiting consumption and, therefore, the economic dynamics.

He mentioned that in recent days he has received many complaints from people who feel intimidated and frustrated in stores due to the approach of business owners or managers reporting that they do not accept credit cards.

“Businesses are obliged to accept payment, even without putting a markup or charging an extra commission, be careful with that,” he warned.

It is not possible for business owners to see both customers and their employees as business enemies. Enough is enough with all the bad things that have happened to us economically,” explained Santoyo.
