The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, spoke of the alleged negative effects that have been spread about the recently approved Pension Reform.

In a public statement, the president spoke about the myths that have surrounded this reform and called on Colombians to participate in a day of information and reflection this May Day.

Petro began by denying the idea that young people will be left without a pension, ensuring that With the reform, 80% of young people will have access to a pensioncontrary to the current situation where the majority would be left without it. He explained that the Contributory Pillar Savings Fund will be created, intended to protect and guarantee pensions of young people, with estimated savings of nearly 18 billion pesos in the first year of the reform.

“It is not true that young people are going to be left without a pension. On the contrary, today, if we do nothing, the majority of young people would be left without a pension, 80% of the total. With the pension reform, 80% of young people will have a pension,” said Petro.

Likewise, the president clarified that The reform will not force people to switch to private pension funds, but the majority of workers will be able to contribute to Colpensiones. Those with incomes greater than $2,990,000 will quote part of its additional income in private fundskeeping their accounts managed by them.

He also denied that the individual savings of contributors will be expropriated of private pension funds, ensuring that these will be maintained and managed by private funds.

Regarding the pension age, Petro stated that it will not be increased, and that it will remain the same as established by the laws today. In addition, denied the idea of ​​eliminating the annuity when the spouse dies, ensuring that it will be maintained.

The president highlighted that the pension reform benefits all women in Colombia, seeking to ensure that everyone can retire, including housewives for their work at home. It is established that as of July 2025, women will be able to retire with 1,250 weeks, gradually decreasing until reaching 1,000 weeks in 2035.. Additionally, they will be able to use the child bonus, which increases the probability of a pension by 22%.
