Babies between six and twelve months old relatively often end up in hospital or intensive care with corona. This is partly due to the reluctance to vaccinate children. This is what journalist Laure Dasinieres and Antoine Flahault (director of the Global Health Institute of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Geneva) write. on the French Slate.
While adults have built up immunity against the coronavirus in recent years thanks to past infections and vaccinations, this is not or much less the case with (young) children. Children between the ages of 5 and 11 are many vaccinated less often. In the age category below, there are almost no corona vaccinations at all. Because the virus can now circulate freely due to the abolition of the corona measures, they are more at risk. Young children may suffer from it, among other things multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) and from lung covid.
Babies are often still well protected against SARS-CoV-2 in the first six months after birth thanks to the mother’s antibodies. But then that immunity quickly declines and they become a lot more vulnerable, Dasinieres and Flahault warn. They point out that the European Medicines Agency has approved the corona vaccinations for children from six months.
