The Venice town hall made public on Thursday the 29 days of 2024 when it will apply its brand new tax of 5 euros targeting tourists who come for only one day in the City of the Doges, victim of mass tourism.

The first dates concerned, concentrated on the high tourist season, go from April 25 to May 5, then it will be the turn of the weekends of May (11 and 12, 18 and 19 and 25 and 26), June (8 and 9, 15 and 16, 22 and 23 and 29 and 30), as well as two weekends in July (6 and 7 and 13 and 14).

This tax, the implementation of which has been postponed several times, only targets tourists entering the old town between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. local time, the town hall specifies in a press release.

“The first step in a system that regulates day-time visitor access”

“It is not a revolution but the first step in a system that regulates access for day visitors,” explained Mayor Luigi Brugnaro, quoted in the press release. “It is an experiment whose objective is to improve the quality of life in the city, for those who live there and those who work there,” he said.

“The margins for error are significant but we are ready (…) to make any necessary modifications to improve the procedure. Venice is the first city in the world to implement this system, which could serve as an example for other fragile and delicate cities that must be saved,” said Luigi Brugnaro.

This project, announced in September, has the main objective of dissuading day visitors who contribute to congesting the city famous around the world for its works of art, its bridges and its canals.

The city of Venice narrowly escaped being listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in danger in mid-September. However, UNESCO experts had recommended at the end of July the classification “in danger” of Venice, a jewel threatened by too much tourism and global warming, due to “insufficient” measures taken in Italy to fight against the deterioration of this site.
