Italy: New stadium for Inter and Milan: Milan gets a football cathedral – football

Milan gets a new showpiece!

The Serie A clubs Inter and AC Milan are to play their home games in a new stadium from 2027, the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium will then be history.

During the planning phase, the associations have now selected the design by the American architecture firm Populous. The project is called “The Cathedral”!

The new construction of the common stadium was inspired by the cathedral and the Art Nouveau gallery Vittorio Emanuele II. “Populous” (has designed more than 3000 sports projects and over 1000 stadiums to date) was already responsible for the construction of the Olympic stadiums in Sydney 2000 and London 2012, the new Wembley Stadium and the Tottenham Arena.

“The Cathedral” replaces the Meazza Stadium, the future of which is still being discussed. It is to be partially demolished after the Olympic Winter Games in 2026, and the area is to be converted into a sports and business district.

Of the almost 80,000 spectators in the Giuseppe Meazza, the number of seats in the new stadium will drop to a maximum of 65,000. Surrounded by a glass facade, the “cathedral” is to become the most ecologically sustainable stadium in Europe. In addition, thanks to technical facilities, it will turn blue (Inter) or red (AC) depending on the team playing.

It is estimated that Inter and AC Milan could each earn at least 80 million a year from the stadium from 2027.
