From the beginning of April this year, thousands of car owners will be able to get license plates and drive with the vehicles they had put at a standstill, paying proportional traffic fees, without surcharge and only for the months they choose.

At the Ministry of Finance, they are preparing a provision that will be voted on, in order to open the MyCar platform of AADE before mid-April, so that those interested can proceed with the removal of immobility and payment of traffic fees “by the month”.

The process
The owners of the I.X. they will be invited to submit an application on the special AADE platform, in which they will fill in their personal and vehicle details. Afterwards, they will pay as many twelfths of the annual traffic fees as correspond to the months of immobility lifting. So they will be able to put the plates back on their cars and drive them around.

Until last year, the immobilization of vehicles could only be done once during the year. So, if they choose to pay e.g. for 7 months or less, they will not be able to legally drive their car at Christmas, unless they then pay the full annual fee again – and for just 1 month’s use of the vehicle.

What will they pay?
Let it be an E.I.X., with corresponding annual traffic fees of 120 euros, which is at a standstill. Its owner only wishes to lift its immobility for three months. The amount he has to pay, before his vehicle is put into motion, is 120 euros x 3/12 = 30 euros.

The month of application (April) will be counted as a whole month for the calculation of traffic fees due. The owner of the vehicle in question must return its registration data to the D.O.Y. until the last working day of June, i.e. Friday 28.6.2024.

If the return of traffic data is made after this deadline, e.g. on July 1, 2024, a fine equal to twice the annual traffic fees is imposed, i.e. in the above case 120 euros x 2 = 240 euros.

What’s in it for you?
In recent years, the “end of the month” system has given way to many owners who had filed plates to repossess and put their cars on the road for 1 or 3 or more months. They were thus spared proportionally from the living expenses, but also a part of the annual traffic taxes. As of last year, however, the charge is now fully proportional for each month.

For example, for a 2009 2000cc car with annual fees of €690, the owner will pay:

– 58 euros instead of 115 euros he paid for 1 month of circulation (-50%)

– 172.5 euros instead of 230 euros for 3 months of circulation (-25%)

– 345 euros instead of 460 euros from July to December.

How are monthly vehicle fees calculated?
*Charge for the entire month, regardless of whether the immobility removal is done at the beginning or at the end.

*For each month 1/12 of the total annual amount will be paid.

Example:

– For annual fees of €120, €10 is paid instead of €20

– 30 euros for annual fees of 120€

– For removal of immobility from July to December: €60

* Penalties: A fine equal to twice the amount of the fees if the plates are not returned to the tax office on the due date

Example:

-For annual fees €120 = €10 for 1 month + €240 fine = €250

Caution! If the vehicle is sold, you also pay the remaining amount of fees plus any debts from other years, otherwise a penalty of double all the annual fees owed by the owner is imposed.
