Ja Morant Suffers Ankle Sprain, Listed Week-to-Week

A concerning setback for the Memphis Grizzlies as star guard Ja Morant is expected to miss at least the next week following a left ankle sprain sustained in practice.

The two-time All-Star suffered the injury during a practice session on Sunday, the team announced Monday. This latest development adds to a growing list of health concerns for the Grizzlies as they prepare for the upcoming NBA season.

Grizzlies Face Early Injury Challenges

Morant’s injury comes as the Grizzlies prepare to open their preseason schedule Monday night against the Detroit Pistons. Their regular season begins October 22nd with a home game against the New Orleans Pelicans. The team confirmed Morant’s injury will keep him sidelined on a week-to-week basis.

He is not the only key player dealing with an injury. Jaren Jackson Jr. and rookie Zach Edey are also currently listed as injured starters. However, Jackson has publicly stated his intention to be available for the season opener.

Morant’s Recent Availability Concerns

This latest injury raises further questions about Morant’s availability. Over the past two seasons, the dynamic guard has been limited to just 59 total games due to a combination of injuries and league suspensions.

Since the beginning of the 2021-22 season, Morant has participated in only 56% of the Memphis Grizzlies’ 328 regular-season games. He has also been forced to miss five games across the team’s last three postseason appearances.

The Grizzlies will need to navigate these early-season challenges if they hope to contend in a competitive Western Conference.
