Newfoundland’s Jaida Lee Selected in Inaugural Women’s Professional Baseball League Draft
A groundbreaking moment for women’s baseball arrived on Thursday as 19-year-old Jaida Lee of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, was chosen as the 14th overall pick in the inaugural draft of the Women’s Professional Baseball League, securing a position with a New York-based team.
The emergence of a professional league dedicated to women’s baseball represents a watershed moment for the sport, offering opportunities previously unimaginable for aspiring female athletes. Lee’s selection underscores the growing talent pool and increasing recognition of women in baseball.
A Dream Realized
Watching the draft unfold from Whistler, British Columbia, Lee described the experience as a “dream come true.” She recounted her initial excitement for friends selected earlier in the draft, followed by shock and overwhelming emotion when her name was called. “I thought I was going a decent bit later, so I was kind of shocked when I went up. And then all my friends were cheering … it was a lot of emotion,” she shared.
The young pitcher, hailed by the Women’s Pro Baseball League website as “one of the most promising teenage arms in North America,” will balance her commitment to the University of British Columbia with preparations for the upcoming season in the United States. While drafted, Lee acknowledges that securing a final roster spot isn’t guaranteed, as only 15 of the 30 players selected by each team will receive contracts.
Pioneering the Path
This isn’t Lee’s first foray into breaking barriers. In 2022, she became the first female to compete in men’s baseball at the Canada Games since the event’s inception in 1967. A testament to her skill and impact, the ball from her first pitch was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.
Lee reflected on the evolution of her aspirations, stating, “I had dreams to play professionally and stuff, but in my head it was always me playing professionally with men. Like there was never a thought, not because I didn’t want it, but there’s just no thought that there was going to be a women’s pro league within my lifetime.” The creation of this league, she emphasized, is profoundly meaningful.
Celebration Back Home
The news sparked jubilant celebrations in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. Lee’s father, Dave Lee, reported that a lively party erupted at the West Side Charlies bar at the Village Mall as his daughter’s name was announced during the draft’s livestream.
Dave Lee recounted Jaida’s early dedication to the sport, beginning around age six. Faced with the absence of girls’ baseball teams, she persevered by playing on boys’ teams. “She had that drive that, you know, most kids don’t have,” he said. “She just worked harder than everybody.” He also noted that she was even encouraged to pursue softball due to the limited opportunities for female baseball players during her childhood.
Now, Dave Lee believes his daughter is inspiring a new generation of female athletes across Canada. “She’s paving a way now for younger players. For the current players that are involved and for the younger players, it should open up opportunities that were never available to women,” he said.
Jaida Lee’s journey embodies the power of perseverance and the transformative potential of a dedicated professional league, signaling a bright future for women in baseball.
