Jailbroken PS5 Now Plays Original PS2 Discs via PS5SX2 Update

Jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles can now run original PlayStation 2 game discs natively through a newly updated PCSX2 homebrew port, bypassing the console’s lack of official backward compatibility. Released on October 10, 2026, the software copies inserted DVDs to storage before launching them at up to six times native resolution.

The homebrew scene has achieved what Sony has long declined to offer, turning current-gen hardware into a capable retro machine. A developer known as Sword has released a significant update to PS5SX2, a native port of the long-running PCSX2 emulator built specifically for jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles. Sony launched the original PlayStation 5 on November 12, 2020, offering a Base model priced at $499, €499, £449, and ¥49,980 alongside a Digital Edition priced at $399, €399, £359, and ¥39,980, powered by Orbis OS and a custom 8-core AMD Zen 2 processor running at 3.5 GHz with output capabilities ranging from 720p to 8K.

PS5SX2 Boots Games from Physical Media

Version 2.01 of the emulator introduces the ability to boot games straight from original physical media. Instead of forcing users to download digital image files from the internet, the software allows players to place a game directly into the console’s disc tray.

The process requires an initial setup phase. When a disc goes into the drive, as detailed in GitHub release notes where lead coder Sword explains that the software automatically dumps it if not already dumped and launches the game, the software copies the game data entirely to the console’s internal SSD or an external hard drive. Subsequent sessions then boot cleanly from that local copy, mimicking how modern console installations operate. For owners of the disc-less PS5 Digital Edition, version 2.02 added experimental support for external USB DVD and Blu-ray drives. In addition to disc management, users of PS5SX2 gain access to a simulated PS2 network card, virtual memory cards offering up to 64 megabytes of capacity per title, and local multiplayer support accommodating up to four participants.

Optical Drive Cannot Read CD Based Games

Despite the breakthrough, physical hardware limitations prevent complete library compatibility. The PlayStation 5’s internal optical drive is engineered to read Blu-Ray discs and DVDs, but it physically lacks the laser capabilities needed to read standard compact discs.

That architectural restriction means any PlayStation 2 game released on a CD—most notably the easily identifiable blue-tinted discs—cannot be read by the optical drive laser. For the exact same reason, original PlayStation 1 discs remain entirely incompatible with the current internal drive method. Homebrew programmer Al Azif has pointed out that the built-in disc identification systems on both the PS4 and PS5 were originally engineered specifically to detect PS1, PS2, and PS3 media. None of this works on a stock, unmodified PS5.

Upscaling, Performance Patches, and Future Plans

Beyond basic disc booting, the emulator introduces substantial graphical and quality-of-life enhancements for supported games. The software can render titles at up to six times their native resolution, pushing visual output into 4K-adjacent territory on modern displays. Players also gain access to custom post-processing filters, widescreen aspect ratio patches, and frame rate boosts.

Software Requires Specific System Versions and BIOS Files

Running the software requires specific system conditions that rule out unmodified hardware. The console must be running an exploitable software version within the range covered by the Relapse exploit, spanning system software versions 7.00 through 13.60. Users must also supply their own extracted BIOS files.

Frequently Asked Questions About PS5SX2

Can I use this on a standard, unmodded PlayStation 5?
No. The emulator requires an exploitable jailbreak environment running system software between versions 7.00 and 13.60. A standard console on current firmware cannot execute the unsigned code.

Do I need to keep the disc in the console while playing?
No. Once the software copies the disc data to internal storage on first use, subsequent game sessions launch directly from that local copy.

Does every PlayStation 2 game run at 6x resolution?
While the emulator supports up to 6x scaling, the developer warns that hardware demands vary significantly, and certain resource-heavy titles may require lower rendering settings to maintain stable performance.
